What is UTM tracking?

Metrics
What is a session?
A session is a tool's grouping of hits from one browser into one visit, usually ended by 30 minutes of quiet. A hit counter does not build sessions.

What is a unique visitor?
A unique visitor is one browser the tool tried not to count twice. It is an estimate, and a hit counter does not produce it.

What is a pageview?
A pageview is one load of a page as a tracker defined it. It is not a person and it is not automatically one widget hit.

Performance
Does a visitor map slow down my website?
The widget is an extra request. It should not block the page if it is loaded the way an image or a deferred script loads.

Privacy
Can a visitor map show a street address?
No. IP geolocation does not resolve a house, a name, or a person. The pin is a coarse place, usually a country and sometimes a city.

Setup
How often does a visitor map update?
The map updates when a browser requests the widget. There is no hourly batch. A cached page that never requests the image does not update anything.

Traffic sources
What is direct traffic?
Direct traffic is the bucket for visits that arrived with no referrer. It mixes bookmarks, typed URLs, and apps that hide the source.
2 min
What is a referrer?
The referrer is the previous page the browser named when it asked for yours. It is a header, not a campaign name.
