Cloudflare Web Analytics and a visitor map can both tell you which countries load a site. They collect the fact in different places, they show it to different people, and only one of them requires Cloudflare.
Where the count happens
Cloudflare Web Analytics sees requests because the site's traffic already passes through Cloudflare, or because you added their beacon. The count lives in the Cloudflare dashboard. Visitors to your site never see it. It is a good fit when the DNS and the proxy are already there and you want page and country numbers without another company's tag.
A visitor map sees a request because the page includes a snippet. The count lives on MapMyVisitors, and the picture can sit on the site. It works whether or not Cloudflare is in front. It does not see requests that never fetched the snippet, including some cached views and anything that is not a page you tagged. Does the map slow the site down is the cost of that snippet: one extra fetch.
| Cloudflare Web Analytics | Visitor map | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs Cloudflare | Yes, for the edge version | No |
| Visitors can see it | No | Yes, if you show the widget |
| Country totals | Yes | Yes |
| Referrers and pages | Yes, in their dashboard | Yes, on the MapMyVisitors stats page |
| Public social-proof map | No | Yes |
| Sessions and funnels | No | No |
How to read a disagreement
Run both and the country lists will rhyme without matching. Cloudflare counts at the edge, including some requests the browser satisfied from cache without hitting your snippet. The widget counts snippet loads, including a few the edge might classify differently. Bots are in both, filtered differently. Compare the top five countries, not the raw totals. The method for reading a country table is how to track visitors by country.
Which one to keep
Keep Cloudflare's numbers if you already live in that dashboard and you do not need a public map. Add the map if the sidebar picture is the feature you wanted. Keeping both is reasonable. Replacing a suite such as GA4 with either of them is not, if you still need funnels. That larger choice is Google Analytics alternatives.
